According to Paul F. Starrs, Ph.D., “In later years, Borein and friends in Santa Barbara traveled from ranch to ranch, looking over the country, but more significantly, sharing memories and stories. This painting offers a special motif: as the group of riders come down a hill into a draw, scattered oaks are in evidence in the background, with the grass bleached dry in the California summer. Shade greets them as they drop into a draw, but with the long line of riders stretched into the distance, most of them are still baked by the sun. Here is work from Borein’s own heart, not of young riders charging from place to place, but of old hands on favored mounts who have broken out their working tack and are traveling to recapture their past.”
