Discussing Waiting for Papa, Clark Hulings wrote, “I am generally inclined to paint a scene such as this in clear strong sunshine rather than in gray light. But it was interesting to concentrate, for a change, on the subtle local colors and the simple patterns of the tree, mule and cart placed in profile against the house. It was important that these elements be arranged to produce just the right balance of lights, darks and shapes.

“An overcast day isn’t ideal for a family outing. Papa had better hurry.”
