Canyon de Chelly is one of the longest continuously inhabited places in North America. The Monument covers 83,840 acres and encompasses the floors and rims of three major canyons where ruins of the early indigenous people are preserved. Owned by the Navajo Tribal Trust of the Navajo Nation, the Monument is home to approximately 40 Navajo families. Access to the canyon floor is restricted, allowing visitors to travel there only when accompanied by a park ranger or an authorized Navajo guide.
