The artist wrote, “In the many hours of elephant watching that Libby and I have logged, most of our ‘let’s get out of here’ moments have been caused by fractious teenagers, perhaps attending a past-his-prime bull, or crotchety cows in a mixed herd. But when a big bull does get worked up, it’s truly bail-out time.

“At my wife’s insistence, we usually back the vehicle toward the elephants we plan to observe and record via camera or sketchpad. And we’re always ready to take off, dust flying, if our subjects indicate displeasure.”
