Western historian Harold McCracken wrote, “Frank [Tenney Johnson] started taking lessons under another Milwaukee artist, Richard Lorenz, who had at one time been a Texas Ranger and specialized in painting scenes of Western life. This association was completely to Frank’s liking. As he long afterward told about it: ‘Nothing better could have happened to me. Lorenz was deeply imbued with the spirit of the West; and just to watch him paint was a liberal education in art. From this experience I determined that someday I would go out into the West, to soak up its atmosphere so that I too could paint its story.’”
