On the Warpath [or] Brave (circa 1892)
watercolor on paper
15.5 × 10.5 inches
signed lower left

On the Warpath is recorded in the C. M. Russell Catalogue Raisonné as reference number CR.ACM.14.

Describing this painting, Frederic G. Renner wrote, “A shield on his arm and his lance at the ready, this Piegan Indian is prepared for war. The Indian’s shield was made of the tough hide from the neck of a buffalo bull. Because the hide was heated over a fire to make it still thicker and tougher, such shields would turn an arrow and sometimes even a musket ball. The symbols painted on it were added insurance against disaster.”
