Who needs the fancy-pants auction houses in New York and London? A few years back, organizers of this annual West-fest had to change the venue from Coeur d'alene, Ida. to Reno, Nev., because the local airport couldn't accommodate all of the private jet traffic. Blame it on mountain high, but buyers stampeded into the most successful sale in the Coeur d'Alene's 20-year history. Leading the charge: high quality works being deaccessioned by the Amon Cater Museum in Fort Worth, including a grand and moody Thomas Moran Yosemite picture. The sale ended up being 99.3% sold and raked in $18 million, nearly doubling the $10 million total for the year before.
