The artist observed, “It’s like looking at a menu. You don’t have to put everything you see in a painting. You don’t have to explain everything to the viewer. It’s the artist’s job to control what you’re looking at.

“A painting that shows you everything isn’t a painting. A good artist distills the scene – he edits – he alludes to the scene and shows you only what he wants you to pay attention to.”
